Mayo road race league update

The recent Carramore 10k was race number one in the 2010 C & C Cellular Mayo AC League and it may be a long way to the final race in December but last year’s winners Gerry Ryan (Craughwell AC) and Catherine Conway Mayo AC) put down a strong marker for the season to come by taking the maximum 25 league points on offer. Ryan is closely followed by three times league winner John Byrne (Mayo AC) and the ever improving TJ McHugh in third place. In the women’s event twice winner and last year’s runner up Mary Gleeson lies in second place with 2003 winner Angela O’Connor in third. The focus will now turn to league race number two, the Decare Claremorris five mile on Saturday evening June 26 at 6pm.

Funeral hospitality

Well the great Gerry Ryan has shuffled off his mortal coil and his loyal band of listeners are understandably very upset. I suppose we’re all a bit shook by it because we don’t expect people that young and vibrant to die. I can’t say I listened to the bauld Gerry that much, he was a bit of an acquired taste and all that women’s talk he went on with never appealed to me. He didn’t care what people thought about him and called it as he saw it, for that he deserves our respect. Anyway as I was skimming through the papers and the pages and pages of coverage I was delighted to see that Gerry is going to be waked in traditional fashion in his family home. Not everyone is waked in their family home these days and waking is not the only important funeral tradition comin’ under threat.

Dramatic events give pause for thought

The three-day weekend leading into a four-day week threw many of us off course over the last seven days but at least things will return to normal soon - or will they? As the ongoing volcanic ash cloud disruption continues to mess up travel and holiday schedules you get the sense that so much is still up in the air (excuse the pun). Making far-off plans for the future just doesn’t seem wise with other shock events rooting us to the spot, such as the passing of 2fm DJ Gerry Ryan, which continues to resonate even one week later. This ‘Lady Di’ moment of ours obviously gave many of us cause to pause and take stock as we try to figure out whether we should continue along the current paths of our lives or change things around radically for the better.

Magical event revives ancient tradition

Ancient gods over Westmeath must have been pleased with Bealtaine celebrations in the mythical centre of Ireland when they held back the rain clouds over thousands of festival goers.

Classic parody with Apres Match

With a World Cup just around the corner, the timing could not be better for every discerning Irish sports fan’s favourite comedy triumvirate to bring their new show to the Kilkenny stage.

Mayo road league winner first home in Kilconieron five mile event

Mayo AC 2009 Road League winner Gerry Ryan (GCH) was first home in the Kilconieron five mile race on Sunday. All money raised went to the Alan Kerins Africa Appeal. Fionnuala Keane (Loughrea AC) was first woman finisher in 31.38. Paddy O'Toole was first Mayo AC man in fifth place in 28.57, followed by Dave Huane in 11th place in 31.19 and Christy O'Malley, who finished in a time of 35.48. The beginning of spring on the local athletics calendar is usually heralded by the Tubbercurry 10k on St Patrick's Day. 2010 marks the 38th running of this popular event hosted by South Sligo AC.

SPORTS SHORTS

Galway Lawn Tennis Club holds a table quiz on Monday March 8 at 8 pm. It is a fundraiser for two members of the club, Jenny Burrows and Jonathan Klampe, who have been selected to represent Ireland at the ITF World Senior Tennis Team Championships in Mexico from March 26 to April 4. Burrows and Klampe are coaches at GLTC, who also work with Connacht’s development squads. Tables of four are €40 each with prizes for the winners, spot prizes, and a raffle.

Athletics

The 2009 Vodafone C&C Cellular Mayo AC road league concluded with the ninth and final race at Westport on Sunday. This was the 11th annual road league and the most successful so far. Increasing numbers are taking part in the league and the Fit4Life programme has become another opportunity for people of all ages to get involved, and this is reflected especially in the number of women participating.
